About the Book

The sole objective of the present edition is to present the ethnic description of 279 Himalayan Tribes in 4 Volumes which range from a few lines to twenty pages in length. Each entry deals with the physical, historical, social, political, economic, religious and cultural life of Himalayan region which is the meeting place of international borders of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, India, Nepal and Tibet. In this edition, we focus on the ways of living of Himalayan tribes—both past and present—and the factor that have caused the culture to change over time and place. The task which we have performed in this edition is, no doubt, beset with difficulties but we shall consider our labour amply rewarded if this monumental work is found useful by scholars and readers of ethnic study of Himalayan tribes.
